Our Maths Curriculum
Intent
It is our intent at Our Lady and Saint Edward’s to encourage children to be ‘deep thinkers’. Our aim is to develop a culture of deeper understanding, confidence and competence in maths. We place emphasis on rapid, accurate recall of key facts and the teaching of the bar model method to deepen understanding of mathematical concepts and problem solving. We want our children to know the purpose behind their learning, to make connections across areas of Maths and to apply their knowledge to everyday life.
Implementation
We teach the National Curriculum objectives which have been organised into a year group skills progression framework. We have adopted the White Rose Maths Hub long and medium term planning materials to support the teaching of Mathematics. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for everybody.
Children are taught Mathematics for approximately 1 hour daily. We incorporate in our teaching, the concrete – pictorial – abstract principle, where children need to use resources to ‘do’ and ‘see’ the Maths, before using images, and then being able to work independently. Support is determined during each lesson to ensure secure understanding based on the needs of the child. Challenge is encouraged in lessons and children are asked to reason and prove their understanding at a deeper secure level.
Impact
We prepare our children to be fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics with a secure conceptual understanding and an ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We strive to develop problem-solvers of the future and build resilience; essential skills our children can use in all aspects of their lifelong learning.
